Whey Protein Powder
Whey Protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body. In its purest form, as whey protein isolate, it contains little to no fat, lactose or cholesterol. Whey protein concentrate on the other hand has anywhere between 29% and 89% protein depending upon the product.
As the protein level in whey protein concentrate decreases the amounts of fat and/or lactose usually increase. Whey protein is an excellent protein choice for individuals of all ages. It provides a number of benefits in areas including sports nutrition, weight management, immune support, bone health, and general wellness. New information on the health benefits of whey protein continues to become available as researchers discover new applications for its unique individual protein components.
Active people require greater protein intakes compared to sedentary individuals in order to remain in positive nitrogen balance. Positive nitrogen balance is necessary in order to promote protein accretion and muscle growth. Whey protein improves recovery, and as the stress imposed on the body during training and competition can suppress immunity, this protein will keep your vitality up.
Whey is a complete protein, meaning it contains all essential amino acids, which are vital to your metabolism, and to making your body function properly for good health. Whey also boasts the highest concentrations of branched chain amino acids (BCAA's) found in nature. Branched chain amino acids are an important source of energy during exercise and play a key role in protein synthesis. Whey protein also has the highest biological value (BV) of the three sources in our product. BV is a measure of how much of the protein is actually absorbed by the body.
The higher the BV the better they are at reducing muscle loss. The gold standard, and the protein that all other proteins are measured against, is the egg. Eggs have a BV of 100. The BV rating of whey is 104 or higher, depending on the quality of the whey. However, soy offers benefits whey alone cannot. It is synergistic. Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability).
Whey prtein is also more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). Alpha-lactalbumin is a whey protein high in the amino acid tryptophan, which the body uses to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. A double-blind study found that supplementing the diet with alpha-lactalbumin helped improve scores on a memory test in people who were vulnerable to experiencing problems with stress. The researchers speculated that the alpha-lactalbumin raised brain serotonin levels in these subjects, which may have improved their tolerance to stress.
